There’s a hole in our democracy that you can help fix!

By clicking on the DC Statehood Petition  button above, filling out the form and submitting it, you have signed the petition.

Washington, D.C. is home to the nation’s capital and also to nearly 700,000 Americans who are denied their vote in Congress. They pay taxes, serve on juries, fight in wars – they do everything asked of a U.S. citizen but don’t have a say in the national laws made by Congress. More than 200 years after the American Revolution, taxation without representation still exists for the people of D.C.

Support one person, one vote by signing the petition for D.C. Statehood.

Key facts:

Congress took away the right of Americans living in D.C. to vote for members of Congress in 1801.

DC was created in 1790 and 37 states have joined the Union since.

DC has more residents than Vermont and Wyoming.

DC residents pay more in federal taxes than 23 states.

DC is a majority-minority community. Our right to representation is a racial justice issue.

Congress can overturn D.C.’s laws and control how it spends its own local tax dollars. Members of Congress not elected by the people of D.C. can override the values and priorities of D.C. residents.

Creating a state out of the Federal District is constitutional. The constitution limits how large the Federal District can be – no more than 10 miles square. Congress has shrunk the size of the Federal District before: when it approved Virginia taking back its portion in 1847.

The people of D.C. have been fighting to have their voices heard in Congress since 1801 but need your voice and support to make it happen!

Statehood will finally give D.C. residents the rights that this country was founded on:

      The right to self governance

The right to participate in and defend America’s democracy

Petition your Friends and Family on the Statehood Petition!

Get your out-of-state family and friends to sign our statehood petition! We need people from across the country to sign because Congress doesn’t care about us, but they care about their constituents – aka your friends and families in actual states. Here’s some language to use:

  • Help strengthen democracy by signing this petition in support of DC Statehood. I and my almost 700,000 neighbors in DC don’t have a voice in Congress when they vote on issues like [pick an issue you/your friends care about: reproductive rights, climate, action, sensible gun control, healthcare, expanding voting, rights, immigration, food safety, education, etc.] The decision to disenfranchise DC residents was done through an Act of Congress in 1801 and not by the founders in the Constitution. Help end voter suppression and taxation without representation by signing our petition to show Congress that Americans care about fixing this hole in our democracy.
