HomeOur Positions

Our Positions

The League of Women Voters bases all of its advocacy work on our positions on the issues. We hold positions at all levels of government - local, regional, and national.

LOCAL POSITIONS

  • Where We Stand, the League of Women Voters of the District of Columbia publication, includes official statements of position for each program area.
  • LWVDC Local Program 2023-2025 was developed by member consensus.  The Local Program development process occurs every 2 years.

REGIONAL POSITIONS

Our regional positions are developed through consensus by members of the LWV National Capital Area.

NATIONAL POSITIONS

LWV Impact on Issues 2022-2024, the League of Women Voters US publication, includes the official statements of position for each program area, briefly traces significant past actions and achievements, and indicates links among positions.

Our Principles

Whatever the issue, the League believes that efficient and economical government requires competent personnel, the clear assignment of responsibilities, adequate financing, coordination among levels of government, effective enforcement and well defined channels for citizen input and review.

Where our positions come from

Unlike many advocacy groups, we are a bottom-up, grassroots organization.
Only through our members can we reach a position and only with those positions can we act. Our positions are approved by our members through a process of consensus.

The League of Women Voters DC

  • acts on an issue only when we have an LWVDC or national position or are acting under League principles.
  • never advocates in opposition to a League position.
  • may use any LWVDC or other national position to advocate at the District level.
  • may advocate using a League position at other government levels if authorized by national.
