Deadline: Sign Up for LWVDC/Frederick Douglass Project Event at Arlington County Detention Facility

About this event

LWVDC members are invited to participate in a program in the Arlington County Detention Facility on July 21st from 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM. The Frederick Douglass Project helps demystify the justice system and those impacted by it by taking laypeople into correctional facilities to have curated conversations with incarcerated people. This is what you can expect from the experience:
  • A 2.5 hour in-person program including group discussions and a facility tour.
  • Guided conversations facilitated by trained staff using proven techniques to encourage respectful and meaningful dialogue.
  • Meaningful dialogue with select incarcerated individuals.
  • A chance to see the justice system firsthand and gain a new perspective on those directly impacted by it.
This facility is accessible from the Courthouse stop on the orange and silver lines of the metro. Side street and paid parking is also available.

Interested folks must complete this form by Monday, June 29th. Please select the "pre-scheduled group" box and enter "7/21LWVDC" in the group name field. The facility needs ample time to process everyone's paperwork and approve their participation, which is why we need to register so far in advance. When submitting the form, folks also will need to submit the security paperwork and a copy of their ID (passport or driver's license).

Why Arlington and not the DC Jail? DC voters are in the Arlington facility! While many DC voters are incarcerated at the DC Jail, most incarcerated voters are housed outside of the district. We will be able to connect with individuals from Virginia and DC within the Arlington County Detention Facility. Additionally, the DC Jail’s application is more involved and takes longer to process.
