We demand democracy not kings!
Our democracy is threatened nationwide and especially in DC with incursions into our home rule powers. There are currently 48 bills that, if passed, would dictate how DC governs itself. Military occupation of our cities, harassment and abduction of our immigrant neighbors, and interference in the electoral and justice processes are but a few of the outrages that indicate that it is time for the largest public outcry ever in the US from citizens such as ourselves. On Saturday, October 18, we're taking to the streets in Washington, D.C. to send a clear message: Power belongs to the people!
Join LWVDC at an event organized by No Kings. This mass mobilization day is our message to the world that we do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of the administration and their billionaire allies. Alongside Americans at events across the country, we are protesting to protect our democracy and build an opposition movement against the looting of our country.
A core principle of the event organizers and LWVDC is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events.
LWVUS and LWVDC are partners in this event along with ACLU, American Federation of Teachers, Common Defense, 50501, Free DC, Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, MoveOn, National Nurses United, Public Citizen, SEIU, and many others.
The event will run from 12:00PM - 3:30PM, but please plan on meeting up with us at 11:30am.
Meeting Location: The gate of the Sculpture Garden at the SE corner of Constitution Ave and 7th St NW. LWVDC will provide Statehood buttons and posters to protesters who meet us there.
